To promote from one belt to the following, students generally complete promotion tests in which they present their skills in the various aspects of the art before a board of evaluators or their teacher.
Grading vary from school to school, but should have such components as the execution of patterns, which unite several proficiencies in specific order; the splitting of planks, to prove the skill to use techniques with both power and control; sparring and self-defense, to present the realistic application and control of techniques
